I wish people wouldn't bring in "facts" to spoil my illusions

Sorry, I'll try not to do that next time, want some unicorn meat to cheer you up, it's no longer the 'other white meat' though

Nice. Good for you. I'll bet that takes the pressure off.
Anywhere nice?

It does, I think I was fortunate in the fact I was one of the few soon-to-be grads with any exposure to C# when I was talking to the guy, and my side projects (find it helps me learn new things by doing) showed ability so I was offered an interview months ago.

Local startup software development company, so no need to move house just yet and I can sort out my student debts etc. Get to expand my skills in a load of new areas too and as it's a close team I'll be working in and around some cool projects. Not game dev stuff but I'd rather not work in that area right now (local place laid off half the staff this week, including nearly ALL the graduates).

That's good.
I was lucky in the fact that a) I got in uni the last year before fees, and b) I was working like a dog for my first year and a half offshore. I was able to pay my student loans off in no time.

I'm not talking about paying off my student loan any faster than I have to

I mean debt from overdrafts, borrowed money etc

Either way it feels good when you get rid of the debts.

Same here. Most degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on, especially if you include the debt that you are lumbered with as a result.

My son's only one year old. I'm already trying to think how I can help him come out of uni (if he choses to go) without crippling debts. It just costs silly money these days, and will only get worse in future years.

Move to Scotland and make him go to a Scottish uni ;)

Can't see how they'll afford to keep uni free with the long term budget cuts coming up.
That'll be a shock to their socialist systems when it happens ;)

Start an ISA for him and get family members to contribute to it instead of expensive presents.

I love the way you suggest ISA rather than Child Trust Fund. That way if he's a dick I can keep the money myself. ;)

Or if he chooses not to go to university you can spend it on something else not entirely for him but may benefit him in other ways (such as a new car for yourself and he can have the old one ;))

Well Child Trust funds are disappearing and an ISA can be opened in the child's own name, plus if others contribute it will not count as part of your tax allowance. Plus you can switch it to higher paying interest rates depending on circumstances.
