More likely they would get you because the gimp mask might restrict your vision, making you more vulnerable.

It appears then that I would be well advised to grease up first.

I think it depends on the situation. Anything more than one-on-one, then I'll back down and ensure I (and my family if they're in the house) am safe. Easier to barricade myself and defend as required, than to try and take them on.
One-on-one really depends. Some people will scarper at the sight of someone in the house. Others might try to frighten you. Others still might be ready to attack anyone in the house.
I think it depends on what's going on. Family in the house and I might well be more aggressive than if it's just me.

The middle of last year we were burgled – I am a lightish sleeper and we had been having one of the next door cats come into the house and steal our cats food / fight with them. I had been getting up and chasing it around the house hoping that it would get frightened and not come back (which has working after I cornered it one night and strayed it with water – it has not come back) Anyway at around 2 am I woke up to a noise, thinking it was the cat I got up and got onto our landing. I then saw that there was torch light downstairs. I went back into the bedroom picked up the large Mag light I always have and came out shouting OI! At the top of my voice and then proceeded to go downstairs VERY noisily. They scarpered and being that the only thing I wear in bed is a bit of “Brut” I decided not to chase them too far down the street In the end I wanted to scare them away but had they stayed I at least had a good club with me. Naturally my “defence” would have been that I was “only” carrying a torch and not a weapon

Did they leave little poos on your carpet, or is that an urban myth?

No little poos - they were professionals rather than kids - they (we found out later) had hit the estate and 2 other houses had been burgled

I don't get the little poos thing? Do kids go into peoples' houses just to defecate?
Like I said, some may scarper. The concern is that they may come back with reinforcement - either numbers or weapons. There was a spate of thefts with VW R32 and Audi S3 cars being stolen. One of my bosses was followed home, assaulted and they took his RS4. That was a four-against-one situation.

Only an idiot would leave a DNA sample for the police.

Indeed they do - if you have kids break in then they often trash the place and crap in the bed etc True but all they were after was the basic electronics stuff (Wii, any phones they could find downstairs etc) and my car is not in the same bracket as an RS4

The pooing thing is thought to be a reaction to the excitement of breaking in, apparently... I reserve the right to make anybody breaking into my house sh1t themselves, I tell you that
