It's not just about the individual. Supermarkets get produce flown in. Post gets delivered to NI by plane. It's really much more far reaching than people coming/going on holiday.

If we're talking "big picture" then the ban on flights is doing wonders for the environment, not to mention the poor sods who have the misfortune of living under a flight path or near an airport.

That'd be me then.
If the lack of flights means more road traffic and extra strain on the already creaking public transport infrastructure then the "wonders for the environment" is just going to be offset.

To the tune of 200,000 tons of CO2 a day? It'd take a hell of an increase of car traffic to achieve that.

I would not go that far. It would mean people losing their jobs. I would be intrigued to know what the impact has been on our carbon footprint as a nation. If it is 200 000 tons a day it would go some way towards us meeting our carbon targets.

Try not to forget all the crap that's been thrown in to the air by the volcano itself. (8+)

+1

CO2 is not the natiest thing getting thrown up by this, or many other, volcanoes by far.

But the ash will have a cooling effect not a warming effect.

Apparently 1% of all trade by volume is via airports, but 25% by value. So it might take time to recover.

As for the noise I am not affected but I bet those living under the flight paths are loving it. I have just discovered my parents are stuck out in Spain but since they have a house there they are not worried by the delays.

We'll be getting a cooling effect in Europe with colder winters thanks to a reduction in solar activity as well.

Beautiful day in London, the only thing in the sky was birds, not a cloud or a plane in sight. :D

Apparently that the volcano is actually doing the planet a huge favour.

Only in terms of Co2. What about the ozone destructive material that's being pumped out? Or the acid rain that'll be caused? There's other environmental impacts other than Co2 emissions.
