That quite a chunk of cash relative to the figures :o

It all depends on how many are employed in games development. It can also be a cheaper subsidy than paying unemployment benefits if the sector was struggling. Also like many creative industries you only need one big hit to pay for all the duds.

Unlimited preorders (gah) is easy - you just don't say anyone is guaranteed to get it on launch day.

You would be a fool to expect otherwise for a very new product with loads of publicity prior to launch.

According to Longworth "the vast majority of the people want to go down to GameStop or Best Buy, they don't want to buy it online right now." Longworth admits that it's difficult to predict how that will change in the future, but "people might be quite surprised. I think physical games will be around a lot longer than some people think."

I think that the success of online games depends on the DRM. I have a number of online games. With the exception of Civ 5 all my download games are old games. All the new ones are discs. Also the downloaded games have reasonable App store DRM so can be used on a number of machines.

There's so much wrong with digital games...

Price. Often much more than it costs to TRAVEL somewhere and buy the game.

Download speeds. Horrendous, game often doesn't install properly when it eventually 'arrives'.

The 'stores' are incredibly rubbish to navigate and purchase from with missing and 'lost' content.

Some games (even PS1 SP games!) won't work without being online.

You can't sell the game. Hell, you could see it deleted with not a hope of getting your money back.

You can't claim your money back when you find out you're the QC guy. Again.

And so on.

Some of the CVGers are suggesting 1.6 is a bit low... :? :|

It depends on how efficient the processing is. It could be very efficient. Look at the current Xbox it is running processors that are long in the tooth and yet still capable of playing decent games. So I would not be too concerned by that. It also helps keep the costs down. Brand new chips could make the console unaffordable.

done correctly or allowed to mature prices can and should be lower than physical media though that is upto the publisher.

Ive never had problems with download speeds from a digital game since hl2. Preloading and arranging downloads over night negates most issues.

Online stores are far better than the horrendous and limited physical stores.

Most games that require you to be online is down to the publisher.

I agree with you on the reselling etc but ive stopped buying any game untill after a good time has elapsed

I should point out that I'm talking about Live and PSN.

Nvidia Shield delayed into July

If that thing makes any money I'll be astounded.

That is more about the failings of Live and PSN. If they improved the customer experience of downloads then it could be workable. As it stands the whole concept is flawed for many people to even risk.

Indeed.

I've spent vastly more on downloads than disks for PC. I only got Skyrim in a box because it was cheaper and I really wanted the map. Apart from that, my last CD was probably a decade ago!
