Running old out dated software without firewalls and AV sounds pretty incompetant.

It's also very common. Look at this forum for example, I think it's 5 releases behind with known vulnerabilities although I've not checked too hard...

I have not looked (or know how to  ), but then there are no credit card details stored unless you have bought a mug, or mouse mat. ;) It might be bad that it is behind the curve but it is not on the same scale as Sony.

Thee are very few large organisations that run 'up to the minute' software. When you're on the enterprise scale, you simply don't throw on every patch the developers push out as soon as they do so. If you're half smart you have to do extensive internal testing and checking first and then you have to schedule the upgrades of multiple servers to do so in a way that is minimally disruptive to your users. And that's without all the bureaucracy that exists inside large organisations - change management, project plans, meetings...

All this stuff takes time. I don't know how far behind Sony were but if they were a couple of months behind that wouldn't surprise me at all. Nor would I necessarily consider that a failing on their part in the real world.

However, given this, it seems very likely to me they're going to miss their self-imposed target of getting some part of PSN available this week - I consider 'this week' to end at midnight today - which does make them look like a bunch of chumps, frankly.

But that’s not the half of it. It turns out that the Sony Online Entertainment network, which serves PC gamers and saw a further 24.6 million customer details compromised to add to the 50 million on the PlayStation Network itself, was actually hacked first. Sony knew about the hack, but didn’t believe any customer data had been compromised so kept quiet. Big mistake, as it turns out. The reputation of Sony will, in my never humble opinion, have been hurt much more by the creeping revelations of consumer data exposure than the short-term harm of warning customers to be on guard, just in case.

Anyone seen anything similar elsewhere? That's the first I've heard of SOE being attacked first :?

Looks like PSN is staying offline as they've been hacked again and some of the data has been published clicky. The data was only that from a 2001 sweepstakes contest though clicky.

One suspects Playstation owners may be erecting a few sets of gallows as we speak....

Because of this fiasco, I know a few friends who've sold their PS3s and bought X-boxes instead.

If I hadn't bought any blu-ray discs, I might've considered selling my PS3, or at least leaving it to one side and getting an Xbox instead. I'm still considering it - if enough of my friends move over to Xbox, I may well do the same.

Long story short, that's obviously been playing on my mate's mind too. Once I've gotten every last drop of value out of the PS3, I'm done with games altogether.

It's the conclusion I'm coming to. What choices have we got?

  1. PC gaming, which is frankly just not 'plug & play' enough.
  2. Xbox - patently don't give a monkey about their customers, because they put out a piece of hardware that failed (approximately) 50% of the time and denied the fact until they were forced to accept it.
  3. PS3 - patently don't give a monkey about their customers, because they managed to lose all their personal data and seem to give much less of a toss about that and much more of a toss about limiting the amount of damage it does to their image (a task at which they prove so incompetent that if any it causes more damage to their image than just owning up in the first place).
  4. Nintendo - seem more interested in gimmicky hardware than their customers, Issue one admittedly usually very good game about every six months with nothing at all in between, seem to have no clue at all about online gaming.

I'm not going to ditch my PS3 because I have a handful of games I want to finish but I'm definitely not going to be an early adopter of anything from now on. None of them actually deserve any more of my money as far as I'm concerned.

I never sucumbed to the PS3 even for blu ray. It was on my wish list but has been edged out by the iPad so I never suffered. Though I am not keen on online gaming anyway. A friend has struggled to get me to sign up to Xbox live, even though it is free. May be now is the time to get one on eBay?

+1 to all that, and that's before you get to the, 'Who cares if it's finished? We'll patch it later...' game releases
