i finally managed to bag a copy at the third attempt (more about that in a different thread). The packaging is rather inventive, I'll give it that. God knows when I'm going to get the time to install it though.

Any pics? All I got was a CD in a wallet and a destruction booklet through the post.

You really want me to post unboxing pics of Snow Leopard?
I dunno, geeks  .

Inside the box is a card sleeve, which actually contains the DVD, a getting started guide and some Apple stickers. The clever bit is the sleeve has a little tab which is designed somehow that when you open the box, the tab springs up for you to pull on, rather than having to I dunno shake the stuff out of the box or bend it or something. It's a very tiny thing but it speaks of attention to detail.

My tweet from when SL arrived :

"Snow Leopard waiting in letterbox! #packaging #win why can't all packaged software come in a box that fits in the letterbox?"

Apparently SL comes with an old and insecure version of flash, so you may want to update it.

This is Adobe we're talking about, when are their products ever secure?

Hardly ever... And no surprise either. Adobe patched the last round of security problems after Snow Leopard was released to manufacturing.

The patches are available at Apple.com and adobe.com

XP, Vista and most Linux distributions suffer exactly the same problem. Between the time the code is released to manufacturing and finally appears on shelves, there are a whole host of problems which have been/need fixing.

Just look at retail copies of Windows, they aren't pulled off the shelves every month on Patch Tuesday and replaced. The same with Linux Distro ISO images, the images remain constant, until the next release, you just need to apply the patches directly after install.

It is all a storm in a tea cup on a quite news week.

True, but even Adobe's patching process is piss poor and damn slow.

"What's that? A security hole you say? Maybe next month..."

So, I've upgraded.

A relatively painless process and nothing apparently thrown away - although I somewhow managed to get 18GB (!) of disk space back.

I do have a couple of weirdnesses

1) I have my mouse plugged into my keyboard and the keyboard plugged into the mac via a tiny unpowered hub. Previously, this worked fine. Now I've installed SL, when I reboot it doesn't spot the connection unless I unplug it and plug it back in again. Odd.

2) I have a mobileme account and it's being a bit 'weird'. The sync seems to be taking an awfully long time and it's sticking on syncing keychains. Is there any way I can kill the copy on mobileme and just get it to upload the copy on the mac? I have a feeling I can do it by telling it not to sync the keychain then letting it sync but I wouldn't bet on that.

Not quite.

In Snow Leopard 1GB is counted as 1000MB not 1024MB (and so on down the line).

So while you have claimed some space back from the smaller footprint of SL compared to L you haven't gained back 18 proper GB you've got back 18 slightly smaller than GB :D

I love the little things that I notice. Like when I send a window to the dock it puts the app icon on it so I know what it is. I also like the new browsable stacks!

So he got 17,5GB back...

MobileMe - when I first synched, it took a while, but it has settled down since. I think the problem is, the apps needed to upgrade their internal databases, so some contacts, calendar entries etc. might have gotten new Ids, so it would need to work through the whole lot and update the synch information with the new version.

The same for the keychain, that uses a unique identifier for the apps, they have new ids, so may have to ask if the passwords need to be transferred - just sent my first email on my old account and it hadn't remembered the password.

Aww! I had a brown jiffy bag with a CD in a paper slip and an instruction booklet... :(

I can confirm the little icon is a 10.5 feature - as is the little progress bar on the Dock icon if an app is processing something.

I wonder at people's ability to see things things as new that have been there for some time! The JoT cartoon commented on the day of the week being shown in the menu bar - which has been there ever since 10.0 as far as I can recall.

Anyway, I'm holding off on SL. I don't need it right now, and even though the price is well within my current straightened budget, I'm going to wait for the first couple of rounds of "service packs" before I jump.

It was but I believe it disappeared some time around 10.4 and there has been a rather grumpy campaign to bring it back ever since. It's the Mac OS equivalent of the wispa bar.

Gav, since you ask so nicely, I'll see what I can do.

It's ok Jon, I'm not actually a big fan of unboxing video's - they're rather sad if I'm honest. I was just miffed at the less-than-stellar packaging I received my Snowy in!

Are we talking about the same thing? The Sat or Mon or Fri in front of the clock on the right end of the menu bar?

If we are, then I can happily report that it's never gone away. I always have it showing, and it's been there since I migrated to OSX back around 10.2.
