I very nearly danced when I heard that piece of news. Hazel Blears and Jacqui Smith in one week really is excellent news.

I wasn't there in 1979, but I've heard the horror stories from my parents about rubbish going uncollected, the dead going unburied etc. If you'd rather Labour continue to bankrupt the Country and return us to an economic quagmire then that's your choice. Personally I don't agree with double figure inflation rates or the Unions dictating public policy.

Personally I'd rather take the fiscal prudence of the Tories over tax and spend any day. I'll also never forgive "new" Labour for destroying civil liberties.

But then I vote Lib Dem anyway, so...

One thing Jimbo Callaghan did know though (he was PM before Thatcher for those who don't know/remember) was Naval Strategy and Diplomacy by force. The Argentinians did plan to invade the Falklands in 1977 and he sent a Nuclear Powered submarine to the area armed with some tactical Nukes and let the Argentinians know about it. That stopped them invading (funnily enough).

Thatcher thought it was far better to send a huge taskforce as a show of force, which were mostly sitting ducks, causing loss of life, more as show of power than the swift silent and deadly approach of Callaghan. Apart from that his stretch as PM and the last Labour Gov in power before Blair in the 90's was his and it was nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

To be fair, Thatcher also sent nuclear weapons to the South Atlantic - and apparently was prepared to launch them. We came off far better than the Argentinians of course, which is a real credit to the RN, although the loss of HMS Sheffield was not only avoidable it was rather shameful too.

Indeed. I was working at the DHSS between 1986 and 1990, and the social wreckage I saw was ghastly. The local mental hospital was closed, so we had the ex patients to deal with. Massive unemployed - not the scroungers you would imagine, but intelligent, skilled workers who were on the arse end of the recession. Soaring interest rates - good for savers, but would you want a mortgage with 15%+ rates? It was horrible to watch.
