Quote:
Today's research suggests that fears of a dramatic decline in the skills of British graduates and school-leavers are driving employers to look abroad.

Of those questioned, 42% felt the literacy skills of British graduates had fallen over the past five years, compared with just 6% who said they had improved. For numeracy the corresponding figures were 35% and 5%, and for communication and interpersonal skills 34% and 19%. There was a similar pattern when it came to British school-leavers.

Many firms are also looking to recruit from abroad, with one in six saying they will bring in migrant workers in the third quarter of this year.

What companies should do is have apprenticeships.

bringing in labour saves companies a huge amount on wages
and that is the only reason they want overseas labour

it keeps the local wage bill low so the companies can have greater/larger profit margins
nothing more nothing less, British business at its very best ...

Yes the unemployment they create is someone else's problem.

They should only be allowed in if they already have a job to go to, they shouldn't be let just because the jobsworths in the EU say they can.

Why should they be allowed into this country and be allowed to use public services when they've never contributed a penny towards them?

I'm not against people coming to live in this country, but I don't like the idea of people coming here just to sponge off our welfare system.

I've always thought this kind of thing should be under some kind of reciprocal agreement - if an EU national was over here and used the NHS or claimed some sort of benefit, the UK Government should be able to bill that to whichever government that person was currently paying taxes to. If they aren't paying taxes, it's their country of origin who gets the bill. Either that or a rule that you can only claim unlimited benefits in your country of origin, and in any other country only claim benefits up to the amount of tax you have paid in that country.

Yes but it cuts both ways. It also allows our citizens to migrate to Germany like BigD and people like Bratty come here.

Also do not forget that the other EU country has trained that person to probably a higher standard than here and so our companies benefit from that. Though that does bring up the issue of the inappropriateness of UK education and the lack of apprenticeships.

There are issues like the wages that some of these companies offer are totally unacceptable to the average UK citizen, they are minimum wage which apart from being well below the living wage, you would be worse of taking because of the drop off in benefits. Migrants will do these because they are better off than they would be back home.

Migration from outside the EU is another matter. I have no problem with economic migrants who can work here for a period of time then return with their cash all completely legal. Though a cap will need to be applied otherwise they will replace everyone with a migrant if it is cheaper.

I was under the impression that for the most part, immigrants to this country have actually paid more in tax than they tend to take out of the system. Most don't settle here, but are trying to build a nest egg to take back home, so we're not saddled with a pension bill, for instance.

Exactly and for those who have that as a plan we should welcome them, no rights to stay or settle. I would even suggest a reduced tax rate on their income, maybe by allowing them to collect a refund once back in their home country.

As an EU citizen, I get unemployment benefit in Germany, not sure if it is recipricol or not - probably not, as we get 60% of final salary as unemployment benefit...
