Microsoft and Sony are counting on their new motion controller thingies, Move and Kinect, to extend the lifespan of their consoles. MS reckons Kinect has five years in it. Ubisoft's European MD Alain Corre disagrees.

GI.biz asked if he thinks the peripherals can extend their respective console's lifespan beyond two additional years. "I don't think so, no," said Corre.

"Yes, it's a good extension of the lifecycle for a certain length of time and it's also a good way to capture some consumers they didn't have on the casual side, because Microsoft's 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 do not have the casual customers. So it will bring in a new category of customer for them," he went on to explain.

"Now, will it prevent them from releasing brand new technology in the next five years? I don't think so," said Corre.

Although that doesn't rule out the possibility that the current consoles may last another five years alongside the release of their follow-ups (as the still-kicking PS2 has managed).
