Train companies have been accused of confusing passengers by having vastly different rules on what constitutes peak-time travel.

Which? magazine said operators were not providing a consistent message.

Some such as East Coast trains began evening peak services in the afternoon while others had no restrictions.

The Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc) said most people were able to buy the right ticket and get on the right train without any problems.

Restrictions
The magazine said the East Coast train company and West Coast Main Line operator Virgin Trains began their evening peak in the mid-afternoon. In the case of East Coast, that means the evening peak period last four hours.

But Chiltern Railways and Merseyrail had no specific evening peak times.

Atoc claims 'four out of five passengers are happy with their journey'."

And if you've read the latest Private Eye you'll know why, the "passenger satisfaction" surveys don't give any opportunity to rate the overall level of service, but only the specific train you're on, and the station you boarded at, not to mention all the questions are worded in such a way as to make it incredibly difficult to give a negative answer.

I wonder how they question those whose trains were cancelled...

Part of the problem is that the peak times in London aren't the same as the peak times where I work.

If you take peak times to mean when the train is mostly being used, the station where I work is busiest in the summer between around 10:00-14:00 and again at around 17:00-18:00. I would imagine London peak times are something like 6:00-9:00 and 16:00-18:00 and like that pretty much all year round...
Back home I guess the peak time would be 6am and 10pm, but then again that's the only time a train comes through our stop...

I mostly agree though, there should be some standard being followed.

They were not on the train when the questionnaires were given out. ;)
