SCE CEO, Kaz Hirai, has ruled out a digital-only strategy for the next PlayStation console. Hirai made the comments in trade mag MCV, despite heading up the only platform to launch a digital-only console in the from of PSPgo. "We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope," he said. "There's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium. "To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme." Hirai's comments are completely at odds with those of EEDAR analyst Greg Short, who predicted last week that both PS4 and Xbox 720 will ditch disc formats. What say you, readers? I cant see discs disappearing for a while yet. Many do not necessarily have broadband and discs can be sold to anyone. |

If blu-ray media starts to approach even half full of game data then who has the speed or patience to downlaod 25GB+ of game? |

Then remember many ISP's have caps. Try downloading that when they have caps. Then try that on mobile broadband with a 3Gb monthly cap.

How about solid state games that allow for installation of patches, DLC, etc... directly to the disc. i.e. Buy GT6 on a SSD and download a new car. Take it round to your mates house and you can play on it there. A bit like memory cards of the past but with more usability? Reduced loading times, no moving parts, etc... |

I thought the same I had mental images of trying to play LPs on a games console. |
