Eggs and shoes have been thrown at the former prime minister Tony Blair as he attended a book signing in Dublin.

He's bloody lucky that's all it was :D

And who is paying for all that security? I do hope that it is not the tax payer. We should not have to provide security outside the borders. Too expensive.

Two things:

  1. Good.
  2. Why is this story in the BBC's Northern Ireland section? FAIL

Groups represented at the demonstration included the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Coalition and the 32-County Sovereignty Movement.

As stated above, he's very lucky that's all that got thrown at him

IIRC all former Prime Ministers are provided with some level of tax payer funded security detail as part of their 'package' for running the country. How extensive that protection is I'm not entirely sure.
As for this specific incident I would expect that the Garda would be providing the bulk of the security, coordinated by Blair's permanent security staff, so it would be primarily at the expense of Irish tax payers. Whether Blair or the British government was picking up cost of this is a different matter.

I can understand it whilst in the country but if he goes off around the world making pots of money for himself he should pay for it himself or stay within the national borders.

I think it's a bit harsh, to be honest.

He did a pretty good job in Ireland.

Wrong "I". The protesters were all about Iraq and Afghanistan, not Ireland.

Blair, or at least Mo Mowlem, did a good job with Northern Ireland. What he will be remembered for, sadly, is riding around on George W Bush's coat tails into unwinnable wars that have caused unnecessary death and suffering on false pretences.

And which could leave him with the stain of being a war criminal.

It is always nice to see things that give you faith in humanity again.

Shame none hit. Maybe we should practice as a nation? Then we could field an army or egg and shoe throwers.

If memory serves, a vicar can call all the men-folk of their parish to an hour's archery practise once a week, and by law they have to attend. Might be worth just a minor tweak to the legislation, even if it is rather old.

Maybe that is why the Tories want to eliminate old legislation? They expect Cameron to mess up, and so want to remove these powers before we have an population of trained egg throwers?
