The problem is that commercially useful research should be wholly funded by the business sector. Blue sky research is what should be left alone and it is short sighted to declare something as unnecessary. Many developments came from blue sky research and without it many branches of technology would cease to have developed. Some cases of blue sky research have no benefits directly but they have benefits in terms of training people with the right skills. Because of the blue skies research into space Surrey University is key to the training of many engineers who now build commercial satellites. That would not have happened with such a narrow definition of what is beneficial. |

He's right when he says it's not the amount of money you spend but what you do with it - look how much Microsoft blow on R&D each year, and what they've got to show for it. |

Yes but only the universities know what might have some prospect. It should not be left to politicians or civil servants. |
