Motoring organisations are warning that the scourge of cowboy wheel clampers is likely to continue, despite new laws designed to stop them.

The RAC says unscrupulous private parking firms will still be free to hassle motorists, even though clamping itself will soon be made illegal in England and Wales.

It says operators are finding a new tactic to get around the law.

Their weapon is legal, and low-tech. It is a parking ticket.

"The fear is that unscrupulous clampers will now turn to ticketing," says Philip Gomm of the RAC Foundation.

"And it'll be the poor motorist who'll end up paying.

So the legislation will be badly written.

Wait. At the moment, any ticket not issued by the council/police can be ignored and they can't do anything about it.

How will this change? If I illegally park somewhere, how can they "enforce" the ticket?

Call in the bailiffs at the first opportunity.

Would it not have been better to just limit the amount that the clampers could charge? At the end of the day that was the real issue and people still shouldn't be able to park where they like.

Call in the bailiffs at the first opportunity.

The first opportunity is after they've taken you to court, which is tricky for all sorts of reasons and they often don't even bother trying - they rely on a percentage of people just paying up without putting up anything like a fight. There are a range of ways you can make collecting the money more trouble than its worth for them.

I don't object to paying fines if you're doing something that inconveniences people. But if the charge is excessive or the situation unjust, stuff 'em.

A limit woud be a good thing. Above which it should be unenforceable.
