It would help even more if packaging that cannot be recycled is banned. That would reduce waste still further.

We've had that here for years, it was always done for glass bottles, for beer and milk, the rest were optional etc. but around 2002/2003 it changes and plastic drink bottles were also included (there are a couple of exceptions, for disposable plastic 0.25L drink bottles and Tetrapak).

That means, you buy a case of Coke, you pay about 1.50€ for the crate and another 0.25€ per bottle, which you get back when you take the bottles back. The size is irrelevant, the material counts. Glass is about 15c a bottle, plastic 25c a bottle - I assume, because glass can break, whilst plastic is more robust.

We have 2 types of plastic, the thicker plastic for re-usable bottles (Coke, premium brand water etc.) and the thin "one-way" bottles, which are crushed when you put them in the return machine at the supermarket.

We had it in England until relatively recently.

Care does need to be given to the methods chosen to minimise the journeys involved. Provided the energy used in recycling is less than the energy to create new bottles, then it's a no-brainer. It could potential lead to cheaper products, since less should be spent on creating new bottles.

The truck that delivers the drinks drives back empty, that is a waste, fill it up with empties and it doesn't significantly affect fuel consumption (compared to full bottles), which means that getting them back to the depot isn't that much of a problem. Once inside, the new bottles and the old must be cleaned, so no real change.

The thick plastic bottles can be refilled a maximum of 10 times, I believe.

Reusing bottle might cost a bit more in petrol but over time will mean less waste, you will get kids looking for bottles to get the deposit. In the past many kids did this as a way of topping up their pocket money, and it cleans the country side at the same time.

When I used to visit my nan when I was a wee little nipper, I always went to the garage area (this was a place full of garages people rented from the council not a petrol station  ) to pick up all the bottles there and made a tidy sum 9well to a 6-10 year old it was. It paid for my sweets and comics for the week. :D

Exactly a great way of getting kids to clean up the area, and make money doing so. And so much cheaper than paying adults to do it.

I'm all for this.

Cans and bottles in South Australia have a 5c return deposit, where as all other states and territories do not. Guess which area is the cleaner?

Some states in the US have even gone to the extent of banning non reusable containers. That saves a fortune in waste management. It also means that companies have to invest in local plants to refill them, which creates jobs.

Mind you, most of oz is pretty damn litter free. It's one of the place's few redeeming features IMO.
