I would imagine that the real figure of homeless is considerably higher. Many of the figures are also with the cuts in housing benefit these people will not be able to find anywhere to live for ages. |

Of course, local authorities have a duty to house the homeless. The only problem with that is the attitude of some authorities is terrible. For example, a housing officer for the now defunct Carrick District Council said that in some cases it was cheaper for the Council to pay the fine for not housing someone than it was to house them, so they would just pay the fine, leaving the person homeless. |

Yes the fines need to be much higher because they will determine that it is cheaper to do nothing. The other problem is that if housing benefits do not cover the rent then they cannot be housed. If someone is on unemployment benefits they are not going to be able to use any of that income to cover any shortage in housing benefit. Plus who have been the beneficiaries of the costs of housing benefit? The rich with their buy to let property portfolios. |
