Quote:
A woman fended off a bear attack on her back porch today by using the first weapon she could reach – a courgette. The woman was stirred by midnight noises in her garden near Frenchtown, Montana. She went to investigate and found a 90kg (14st) black bear attacking her 12-year-old collie. She screamed to divert the bear's attention but it charged her.

Not surprising if you have ever met a militant vegetarian.

Brings tears to the eyes.

Should have thrown an Apple at the bear

a MacBook Air would make a good projectile like a discus

Possibly not. The MBA is a funny aerofoil shape and this could cause it to veer off course or just become unstable in flight. An Apple TV (2010 revision) would be smaller, and a better shape to throw. Add to that the ability to put some serious spin on it, it should knock the ursine invader into the middle of next week.

My mate has had to avoid the attentions of a woman who's been known to wield a courgette, so I don't blame the bear

For some reason this puts me in mind of the scene in Blackadder Goes Fourth where he's trying to get Field Marshal Hauge to get him out by reminding him about when he saved his life.
