Burrrr! My flat has single-glazed sash windows and no central heating. Me thinks the electricity money is going to go down more than the regular £10/week.... |

DIY secondary double glazing? Even if it's made with cellophane it could still halve your bills. |

When I used to live on my own, my thermostat was set at 12*C and I wore thermal t-shirt/long pants and socks under my indoor clothes, as well as a hat and a hoodie. Kept me very warm. |

Is it really the case that last winter was 'harsh?' Yes it was cold at times but compared to many other countries it was nothing to write home about. |

Last year wasn't "harsh" by a long shot. And as for it being "unusual", it depends on what timescale you're working to. |

When I was a kid, we had more winters like the last one. I remember going to school in the snow which lasted some time. |

When I lived alone I also just put on extra clothes. Unfortunately SWMBO feels the cold a lot more than I do. Having said that we live is a reasonably OK house with double glazing and an OK amount of loft insulation. Keep meaning to increase it (but would have to rip up all the boards) and maybe get cavity wall insulation |

Yes we had quite a few snowy winters when I was a kid as well. Last winter was harsh in that it lasted for so long. There were concerns about wildlife numbers. I will be putting out the fat balls for the birds again this year. |

Well, since the weatherguessers told us last winter would be mild, and the previous summer would be hot, I set no store whatsoever in what they are guessing this time. My prediction is the nights will be long, the days short, there will be an extended period of gluttony towards the end of December and into the new year, and we will suffer or enjoy a variety of meteorology. |

We had to close work, because of ice. And we're right on the harbour side. It was, apparently, unusual. Then again, when I lived in Scotland, I remember a week off college because of 14 inches of snow. I remember ice skating and curling on the local reservoir when it would freeze over thickly enough to do that. It hasn't happened since I left Scotland, by all accounts. (Also, these days, skating on a frozen reservoir? H&S would never allow it.) |

Yes but this prediction is not from the met office. It was from the company that said it would be cold last year. |
