Indeed.

Although he'd got to a state where his being alive was possibly sadder.

Yes, you're probably right, it's still sad to see a screen legend go. I used to love his films as a kid.

I think I came a bit late to Norman Wisdom. By the time I managed to catch any of his work, alternative comedy was in full swing and he was seen as being rather naff and out of favour. It's only later, with the wisdom of time (if you'll excuse the pun) it's possible to see how good a physical comedian he actually was. Maybe not Chaplin or Lloyd good, but probably as good as the UK has produced post-war.

One other thing his name springs to mind - I saw one of his films that also starred a young Honor Blackman in army uniform. That left a fair impression.

(quick IMDB : The Square Peg made in 1959. She was 32. Cripes, didn't look it. He was 44! I think he looked 40 when he was 20, and still looked 40 when he was 70...)

Still do. They might have dated a bit but they are still funny.

I remember seeing his films on TV when I was very young and enjoyed them a lot. Although I haven't seen any of them in a long time I used to find them very funny. Here's a little bit of Sir Norman doing what he does best: On The Beat.

To be honest I'm surprised he was still alive, I thought he must have passed away a couple of decades ago at least. Anyway I have many fond memories of his films during school holidays and will miss the homage that the BBC will no doubt broadcast over the next few weeks.

I'm actually finding it hard to feel sad about this, oddly.

Sir Norman gave pleasure to so many people over such a long time, especially in Albania. His films will live on - I expect a season to appear on BBC2 or Channel 4 of an afternoon - and as was mentioned earlier it came as a surprise to many that he was still with us after all these years.

Well only because his films were not even vaguely political and could be viewed as the little man against the big corporate in a number of his films. So that they were able to be shown uncensored in Albania.
