Sony has successfully combated the recent arrival of a new PS3 modchip on UK shores.

According to UK games trade body UKIE (formerly ELSPA), the PS3 Break device allows illegal copies of titles to be played on PS3. It has been available in the UK since September 13.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was apparently quick to react, advising a number of retailers to desist in selling the product. Most complied immediately, while all others are said to have followed suit once the platform holder obtained court orders against them.

"Having our member, SCEE, respond so quickly to prevent the sale of illegal PS3 modification chips shows the commitment that the video games and interactive entertainment industry has to stamping out intellectual property theft," said UKIE director general Michael Rawlinson.

"Intellectual property theft is a hugely damaging crime both to the individuals whose creativity is stolen and to the businesses that make up Britain's video games and interactive entertainment industry."

Hackers first cracked Sony's PS3 protection back in August when they brought PSJailbreak to market.

This has reminded me of dodgy Sunday markets :)

I was thinking "Who the [LIFTED] are UKIE?", and then I realised ELSPA have changed name....AGAIN.

I can't say I have much respect for ELSPA TBH, some of their interpretations of UK/EU law (not to mention legal decisions) are just plain wacky.
