TBH I don't really see the interest revenue != profit (directly) and Google make a shedload off advertising which doesn't need them to sell products That and the 1 million sales of Angry Birds on day 1 shows how popular apps can be on the Android platform (I'd love to see what their uptake on ads is) Unfortunately it is suffering from fartware, just looked on the free puzzle section and it was awash with shovelware for sliding picture puzzles, all with a different image, all blatantly infringing copyright (as I doubt they have permission to use the Toy Story 3 images without permission) |

They still host the servers that the ads come off though and the bandwidth those adverts use has to be paid for, so it's not 'money for nothing'. I'd agree profit is a better measure but Google do have significant outgoings, not even counting the cost of all the stuff they give away for free like GMail, which given the data storage and bandwidth requirements must cost a sodding fortune. And you'd need to sell quite a few ad views to make comparable profit to the markup on macbook pro. I would be as equally unsurprised to find Apple made more profit than Google as the other way around. Its rather comparing apples (groan) to oranges. Oh, hot off the presses - Google Profits Rise "Google said net income to 30 September rose to $2.17 billion, or $6.72 cents a share, from a year earlier. The company said revenue climbed 23% to $7.29bn. Wall Street had been expecting $6.67 a share and net revenue of $5.2bn. Shares jumped nearly 10% to $592 in after-hours trading." I was discussing this on another forum, where someone was getting into the 'Apple only has 5% of the market so they're small fry' argument. Apple seem to have gotten scarily big, scarily fast. That's not generally something that's sustainable in the long term.
To take up the point you made above, is a million downloads as important as how many sales they get of the full version? How much money (e.g. how many ad views average) do you get out of an ad supported free version vs the ad free paid version? Jon |

Well 2 million downloads now, the full version is free + ad supported. Reports show ad supported apps make better revenue sources than paid ones in some cases http://www.macrumors.com/2009/05/06/adw ... lucrative/ There was a better article than that but I can't find it, it was about someone on the app store who released a paid app, then later released a free and ad supported one and the free app generates more than the paid one does/has done due to it being much more popular Also to bear in mind the ad supported app can generate revenue as long as it is installed, as opposed to a flat rate per unit |

I can see that - kind of like the economies of scale argument.
This is true if the user continues to use the app for a period of time. if people are generally treating ad-supported freeware the way they use demos, the revenue period per user will be short. The fundamental point is fairly obvious - a good game like Angry Birds will make money whether you give it away or sell it, because people will pay for it/keep playing it/both. It strikes me sales are better for things that are popular but that you think will have relatively short lifespan. |

Revenue from advertising though - you're moving your revenue upstream, and by doing so you're at the follies of the advertising industry, and ultimately, the success of the firms they represent. Talk about swimming with sharks... What's the deal structure like any way for an app supported by ad space? Is it a few cents per download? Per successful click through? |

He knows the future does he? Blimey. Why is he fecking about running a Canadian phone maker rather than ruling the world then? Actually, looking at RIM's results, maybe he should be using his eldritch psychic powers a little closer to home? |

Unbiased source of what, Rim's response to Jobs lies? What kind of unbiased source would you expect to defend RIM? I am confused! Shall we commission a independent inquiry whether Jobs is lying again? |
