The social housing budget in England is to be cut by more than 50% in the Spending Review, the BBC understands.

Council houses "for life" will also end for new tenants, with their entitlement assessed at regular intervals.

According to the BBC's chief political correspondent, Norman Smith, the government will launch a consultation on its proposals for reforming social housing later in the year.

AKA We've got someone who'll play ball and helpfully list all the things we were gonna do anyway

That makes sense to me. Subsidised housing should be for those who really need it.

The private rented sector would also be expected to take up more of the burden of housing the poor, although campaigners have questioned whether this will happen.

They are living in cloud cuckoo land if they think that will work. First of all private landlords demand guarantees, and only someone with a substantial income will do. How many people in Sheffield Nottingham or Rochdale would find that easy. That or huge deposits which if you are on benefit would mean breaking the means tested limit if you had such funds. Secondly most private landlords will have nothing to do with benefit claimants. All this will do is create more homeless.

Campaigners fear cuts of 50% or more to the social housing budget could spell the end of new social housing in England but the government believes allowing councils to charge up to 80% or 90% of the market rate for rents will make up any shortfall.

Many cant afford market rents on minimum wage jobs. All this will do is create ghettos

Yes but as these cuts take place more and more people will qualify for them. I have no problem with ending the tenancy for life but first get rid of those that disrupt the community. Also what will they do to those who are asked to move? What if they then decide to buy the place instead of moving? It looks decidedly badly planned.
