Quote:
A street cleaner's cut finger is set to cost Hull City Council at least £100,000 after judges ruled he was given the wrong gloves to work with.

Steven Threlfall was injured by a sharp object in a bin bag as he cleared a garden at a council house in May 2006.

Three judges at London's Appeal Court ruled that his employers had failed to provide him with cut-resistant gloves.

They ordered the council to pay £30,000 towards final costs, which are expected to run into six figures.

Severed artery
The court also said Mr Threlfall must be given £3,000 damages immediately until a final settlement is agreed.

A small cut to the finger?
You shouldn't be allowed to claim anything for such a minor injury IMO.

The story suggests he severed an artery and a tendon that required surgery but doesnt go on to say if there's any lasting complications with his finger. I also understand the guy himself has only been paid out £3000 so far with the rest paying fees and whatnot.

PLus there's christ knows what infections you can get from cuts from unknown objects. I assume that's all been checked and he's OK, but the point being not providing 'safe' equipment can have very yucky consequences to what would immediately appear a relatively slight injury.

That's what the story said. I'd imagine the council thought it was a good idea to fight it on the basis that providing cut-proof gloves to all cleaners would actually be quite expensive. Course they'll have to do that now anyway, so it makes the decision doubly stupid.

This is why I hate blame and claim. £3k compo but solicitors fees etc will take it close to £100k. Only Lawyers win.
