Yeah - it was on it's way for it's "sea trials" but never even made it to the open sea
Wonder how much that will cost to fix.

Modern military subs have weird/ supersecret rubbery coatings that make sure there are no bubbles (and therefore no noise) generated by turbulence as they move through the water. You'd imagine some of them would have been damaged. You'd also imagine they can't be replaced without dry-docking it. It could probably do some of it's sea trials as it is, but they'll have to be fixed before it goes in to service. Cost : A lot. |

They may even cancel the trials - the acoustic tiles also reduce the sonar return of the sub, and damaged tiles could increase the flow noise - limiting it's operating speed and area. It's likely the trials will include some kind of evade and escape exercise, which could now be pointless; depending on the scale of the damage. |

Also, they were saying on the news that a lot of the top secret propulsion system is now exposed and visible to people on bridges, ferries etc.. |

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "This is not a nuclear incident. It's a nuclear sub, therefor it is a nuclear incident. There may have been no (extra) radiation released, but is is still a nuclear incident, and may have been a lot worse. wasn't the captain of the frigate which crashed a few years back court marshelled? |

So that steam is not coming from its nuclear power generator then? It needs sea water to be sucked through to its engines to keep them cool re. nuclear power - so hope it does not suffer a meltdown! When is the next high tide ?! |

High tide is about 7.30pm She was 800yds outside the marked sea lane - If it wasn't a system failure, someone's career has just ended. |

There was the case of the captain how grounded his frigate or destroyer off an island just off New Zealand or Australia some years ago. I am not sure of the outcome but commentators had commentated that it would not be the end of his career. The navy need captains willing to take risks. If you drum out risks you create the same problems that led to the fiasco at Jutland. |
