Called the XM-25 it has been described by the US Army as a 'game changer'.

It uses a laser guidance system and specially developed 25mm high explosive rounds which can be programmed to detonate over a target.

Warfare goes FPS by the looks of it. I do wonder how exactly attitudes to combat have changed since the ability to kill has become more and more remote.

Well, it makes it more clinical, as well as less traumatic for the soldier involved. It also makes it far easier for the war to be sold to us as a clean and blood-less affair. The media quite happily shows us the results of enemy action - the aftermath of suicide bombs, village raids etc.. It also likes to show shots of our soldiers firing stuff into the distance. Whet they don’t like to tell us is that the results of that action also results in fatalities, serious injuries and mutilations. It’s considered bad show to consider that kind of reporting.

The history of warfare is all about how man has distanced himself from the hands on killing of the enemy. Weapons such as swords and daggers mean that you don’t have to touch the enemy, spears further distance the kill, guns even more so. Now you don’t even have to be in the same country or on the same continent to do the job.

Will they have smart solidiers who don't use it to KIFF their allies taking cover behind the wall, or the civilians inside the house. A bad idea, if you're going to shoot and kill someone, you should be able to see the target.

fun fact: the gun held by the chappy being shot at looks suspiciously like an SA80, implying that he is a British soldier :?

Implying that the people we happily arm and train today will be those that we fight and kill tomorrow.

I don't know about 'unveiling', these things are already in action - they were given to one soldier in every platoon in one of the US aircav brigades a while back. 'large scale field testing' they call it. I wonder how many people have already been 'field tested' to death...

IIRC they've had this kind of thing for a few years, but it was originally on a tripod mounted weapon system.

I saw a video demonstration, with slo-mo replays, showing the rounds initiate after they passed through a window opening.
