A group of Milwaukee police officers decided to name themselves "The Punishers" as part of their plan to dish out vigilante justice. Now comes word that the group was arrested after beating up a man, who they accused of stealing a wallet from an off-duty police party.
The man says that he was attacked by drunk police officers, who repeatedly kicked him in the head and groin, ripped his clothes, rammed pens in his ears and threatened him with a knife and gun. They also used racial slurs.
Shortly after the beating, the group was charged but acquitted. They were then charged in federal court for violating civil rights and were all convicted.
Captain James Galezewski said that the officers wore black caps and gloves with skull symbols and had Punisher skull stickers on their cars, lockers and memo books. Some also had Punisher tattoos. And one was convicted of trying to buy an assault-style rifle similar to the one used by the comic character while he was out on bail – a violation of federal law.
"This is a group of rogue officers within our agency who I would characterize as brutal and abusive," said Galezewski. "There is reason to believe the membership extended beyond those who were convicted in the case."
