Hackers have already moved to crack open new PS3 firmware that's not even been out for a day.

Sony released a new firmware update (version 3.56) last night that it said "adds a security patch" to the console - the firm's first move to shut out hackers since the PS3 protection software was completely circumvented earlier this month.

However, within hours of the new update's release, Wii hacker Youness Alaoui, also known as KaKaRoToKs, announced on Twitter that he'd successfully unpacked the firmware and published its signing keys, opening the door for new custom firmware to be created that would mimic the latest update and allow hacked PS3s to regain access to PSN.

On the plus side for Sony, it today won a court case against the man largely responsible for the PS3's security breach, George 'Geohot' Hotz, who was hit with a temporary restraining order preventing him from partaking in any PS3 hacking activities.

(The links have the stories mentioned above too)

I'll be very interested to see how this all plays out, if Sony keeps releasing patches I'll just sell the fcuking thing

That makes me think of an article I read in my local paper today. A bloke got an asbo that said he couldn't harass people for 9 months. It made me think, "so after nine months it's fine?". What are they on about, it's always wrong!

During the sentence they may learn the error of their ways and cease to be a nuisance once the time is served.

They're not hacks, they're cracks. I really wish technical publications would learn the f***ing difference. :x

+1 For most they do not know what a cracker is but know what a hacker is.

Well if it was cracked in 2 hours it was probablly hacked together in about that time by a Sony employee ;)

Don't you have the option not to patch it? Or does it do it automatically the moment you plug it into the internet?

If you're not at the latest patch level it won't sign you into PSN, so you can't play games online or download stuff from the online 'store'. Plus games tend to have minimum firmware requirements, so eventually you're going to end up not being able to play games.

You can, you can and not sure, but the required firmware is fixed too

Sony have just gotten the same treatment the other big games companies have suffered
