A quick inspection of my Facebook friends confirms that, but many may just be work acquaintances. Though since in reality most people have far few real friends.

Could the be generalised to: men over 40 couldn't give a damn and the older you get the more likely it is that you'll get to know more people?

I know more than 1500 people in 88 countries but how many have I added to my Facebook page? 11. I do not care about adding people like they are meaningless. My real friends can always email or phone me any time of the day or night.
