So it was under the total control of the autopilot for a few minutes. ![]() ![]() |

A lot of planes are under the effective control of the autopilot for most of the flight anyway. If the thing's at 30,000 feet and flying level in a straight line, I don't really see what the pilot actually has to do. I'm more bothered about the fact that they put a sodding great armoured door in after 9/11 yet apparently they have to open the door every time someone wants to go for a leak. What's the sodding point of that then? |

Coming back on a flight once, they landed the plane on auto pilot. They announced before the landing and the pilot said there was an instant override if he took hold of the controls. |

If you're landing in the dark or in wet weather the pilot is pretty much relying on the ILS until he's virtually on the ground anyway. No reason at all that a computer couldn't do exactly the same thing. Jon |

That was my point of the smiley. I should have put a sarcasm tag on as well. Also armoured doors are probably overkill for Europe. |

Only the pilot waited to tell us that the auto-pilot had done the landing until after we landed. ![]() |

I have no fears of an automated landing. The autopilots are well programmed and very safe. Apart from the one in Airplane. ![]() |

My father spent a lot of his working life installing and maintaining aircraft landing systems. If you've ever flown out of an airport between Newcastle and the most northern Scottish Islands, about 10 years ago, then you've been at the mercies of his expertise. It's actually pretty safe, an automated landing. The control towers can, I think, also remotely bring a plane in. |

I agree. It was a perfectly smooth landing in snowy/blizzard conditions. Better than most normal landings. |

A modern autopilot can pretty much land the plane more smoothly than the pilot, it is just pride and unions that keep the pilots taking off and landing... ![]() |
