Unmarried couples who spilt up should get the same rights as their married counterparts, according to the most senior family judge in the country.

Marriage is that legal committment, and it's a commitment that you choose to make.
The state shouldn't be effectively forcing the rules of marriage on people who aren't ready for it, or just don't want it.
If you had rules like that, people with savings etc wouldn't go out with each other.

So you are living together maybe for several years jointly paying a mortgage etc The value of the property has increased, are you saying that the value of the property shouldn't then be equally split if the couple split up ? :?

I assumed you missed that bit in the article ;)
A partners right for support in the case of children is still the same.
Marriage or civil partnership is the legal joining of two peoples assets (excluding any prenup agreements, which are gradually being takin into consideration) as they say for richer or poorer.
Just being a couple IMHO means you are not doing that. So why should you then claim against another persons assets (house, savings or pension). What would be the qualifying time? What would then constitute a relationship?

There might be a reason that they do not get married, such as protection of personal assets. If this was the case they would split up or not live together, because the law would treat it as marriage and so could mean that they risk losing some of their fortune to some one that they live with.

If you take my situation I have been living with Nicola for 6 years, we have a child together, joint bank accounts, etc etc. We're 'married' in every way but the piece of paper and a couple of rings (which we intend to get this September in Italy).

Even so you might still need to have insurance to protect the other person incase of a photocopier explosion or other cause of a fatality. If you are not married and have no will your family will own the house unless you have a legal agreement over the property.
