Sony has released a statement with regards to news that the PlayStation 3 has been hacked, explaining what the repercussions will be for those who decide to play hacked games on their console.

In short: Sony will take away all your PSN privileges, a bit like when your parents take away your console when you have been a very naughty boy.

Obviously the implications of widespread PS3 hacking are pretty severe for Sony. The PlayStation 3 has been a massive success to the company in recent years, but the majority of the time it has been on sale, it has been something of a loss-maker – the hardware behind those next-gen graphics costs a packet. The real money has come from selling the games.

Terminated permanently
In the statement, Sony explained: "Unauthorised circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers.

"Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the 'System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System' and the 'Terms of Services and User Agreement' for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions.

"Copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorised or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently."

Sony also notes that using this homebrew kit will void any warrantee you have on your system.
"To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorised or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems," the statement continues.

Sony seems intent in nipping piracy in the bud before it starts – but is stopping access to the PSN really going to deter users?

How long before they start cutting off people who've never been near the stuff?

Didn't Microsoft do the same when people modified their hardware??

Yup. It's pretty standard practice in online gaming - if somebody cheats or otherwise does naughty things, you lock them out.

The difference is that MS didnt release the XBox360 with a major feature (for some) and then remove that feature and go "hard cheese"

Let's not kid ourselves there are hordes of people who get banned for running some variant of linux on their PS3 so they can contribute to folding@home (actually, that's a bad example, but anyway). The vast majority of the people they block will be people who are playing pirate software and frankly I have not an iota of sympathy for them.

It]s getting to the point that whenever I turn on my PS3, there’s a bloody big software update to install before I can connect to PSN. Frankly it’s annoying. The same happens for the PSP, and quite frankly, I wonder if it’s worth the effort at times.

I have no sympathy for those who play pirated software or want to run cheats but Sony did release their console with the ability to run OtherOS and then decided to be totally insane and remove that feature in the most cackhanded way.

Yes, but that's not really relevant. Sony are BanHammering people who their systems detect are running pirated software. That's what the thread is about.

New PS3 jailbreak allows gamers to undo PSN bans - report

Following Sony's move to block PS3 hackers from the console's online functions, a new jailbreak has been released which reportedly allows users to unban themselves on PSN.

Reports of the platform holder banning jailbreak users began appearing on Thursday, after Sony released a warning to anyone taking advantage of hacks.

Hackers were sent a message directly from Sony. It read:

"A circumvention device and/or unauthorized or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation(R)3 system. Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from your PlayStation(R)3 system. Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to the PlayStation(R)Network and access to Qriocity(TM) services through your PlayStation(R)3 system."

However, Destructoid reports that an all-new jailbreak not only claims to allow user to unban themselves, but also to ban (and presumably unban) other PS3s - so long as the perpetrator is in possession of their console ID.

It all sounds dodgy as sin, obviously. But Geohot's not rapping. Which can only be a Good Thing.
