A Somali man who pleaded guilty to piracy has been sentenced in the US to more than 33 years in prison.

Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse is the only survivor of the crew of pirates who attacked the Maersk Alabama merchant ship off Somalia's coast in April 2009.

If they had a policy of killing all pirates then the pirates would probably take hostages and be even more ruthless.

They do anyway. What about that Brit pensioner couple who had a sailboat that got captured by pirates in that area? Aren't they still being held to ransom?

In many cases when vessels have been boarded the crew have effectively locked themselves away from the pirates which has saved their lives. In other cases crew have been killed. The pirates don't give a crap either way.

No, they were released in November after a ransom was paid. More here.

Hijacked Americans 'killed by captors' off Somalia

Quote:
In a statement, US Central Command said that negotiations were under way between the US Navy and the pirates, when the US forces heard gunfire coming from the Quest about 0600GMT.

They boarded the ship, killing two pirates in the process, and discovered the four Americans shot. The US Navy sailors attempted to provide first aid but the hostages died, the military said.

More from the BBC here.

While sad, the question must be asked - wtf were they doing sailing anywhere remotely within reach of the Somali coastline?

How far out are these pirates venturing?

I'm sure I read somewhere that they (the couple who owned the boat) were spending a few years touring the world and spreading the word of the Lord by handing out Bibles.

Found it:
Quote:
Friends of a US couple aboard a yacht hijacked off Somalia on Friday say the pair knew their journey was risky, but were determined to press on with their Christian mission.

Pretty far out into the international shipping lanes I'd have thought, otherwise what's the point?

At least as far as the Seychelles.

Four Americans hijacked by Somali pirates off the coast of Oman have been killed by their captors, US defence officials say.

I nominate them for a Darwin award.
Yes, the pritaes did the shooting, but a previous news report said that they knew it was dangerous, but they decided to sail there anyway (to distribute bibles apparently).
