Couple of points though.

1 - Don’t all major OSs include a server of some form. Mac OSX comes with Apache, I bet Linux does too. Does Windows have some kind of server? I know XP Pro and Win 2000 did, what about Vista?

2 - Most domestic ISP terms & conditions forbid connecting an outward looking web server. So I can’t point DNS server at one of my machines and use it to serve up web sites, etc..

Apparently it's a pig to develop with. Lots of javascript-y type stuff.

Windows XP, 2000 and Vista (in their most expensive form) come with IIS.
