Post subject:  Sexy Ubisoft Wii game slammed by outraged parents and MP Vaz
Ubisoft's startlingly sexual trailer for Wii and PS3 party game We Dare caught many of us unawares this week - and now we can add The Daily Mail, Keith Vaz MP and furious parents to that number.

The teaser (in every sense of the word) showed two consenting couples seemingly indulging in a bit of light partner-swapping titillation, helped along by the mini-games in Ubisoft's otherwise 'flirty' title.

It's perhaps little surprise, then, that the game's '12+' PEGI rating has caused a fair bit of uproar - especially in the gaming community's favourite newspaper.

Long seen as an 'enemy' of gaming, Leicester East MP Vaz at least showed a rare understanding of the wider market with his surprisingly sensible criticism.

He said: "The new 'We Dare' game has clearly been wrongly marked as a 12 plus. As a family friendly console, Wii must ensure that there are proper checks and a full consultation before games are graded for use by children. This game should not be released until these checks are made."

Outraged parents, however, were less restrained. Today's Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph quote Laura Pearson, 52, from Birmingham, who said: "I have a 13-year-old daughter and if I knew she was playing such a highly charged sexual game with boys, I would be appalled.

"It is encouraging under-age sex. The video pretty much shows them swapping partners, girl-on-girl kissing. That kind of thing is not something that young teenagers should be exposed to.

"Nintendo Wii's are family consoles popular among children and youngsters. This is totally inappropriate."

George Hardy, a 46-year-old father, said: "No wonder we have problems in society with unsafe sex and under-age sex when kids can get hold of games like this.

"This sort of computer game will only serve to fuel sexual tensions and, in a worse-case scenario, sexual touching or assault.

"Imagine a room of testerone-fuelled teenagers playing this, something could get out of hand. It sounds drastic but I could see it."

A PR headache for Ubisoft, then. But then again, what was the last run-of-the-mill party game to enjoy this level of publicity?

What's that? You want to watch the trailer again? Remind yourself it wasn't all a hallucination? Yeah. Us too.

How?

The game doesn't feature the content that would cause a higher rating, just the suggestion, flying through the air or an apple eating contest is hardly 'suggestive', there may be mini games that are but it's pretty tame compared to the plot of games like Custers Revenge (which aren't exactly explicit sexual acts in modern day standards)

Nintendos consoles might be family friendly, but there are 18 rated game/s on the Wii, and it's the duty of parents to raise their children properly

Well, not taking into account the context of any game is just a bad idea in general, but then they go on to mention 'obvious sexual innuendo, explicit sexual descriptions or images and sexual posturing', for 12 year olds. Maybe I'm missing something there :? , and I believe it's only a recommendation (and parents should be responsible anyway), but still...

Carry on films had obvious sexual innuendo, would you let a child watch one?

Sex is a pretty easy thing to get past the ratings, they really care about the violence IMO

Yeah, cos innuendo doesn't bother me, and I suspect the average 12 year old these days would understand it - the film that sticks in my (biased ;) ) mind is Batman and Robin, it was a PG and loaded with it... If what they're saying about the rest is true though, I'd have to question the implication of PEGI's rating :|

+1 on the focus on violence, probably a symptom of the sort of media attitudes parents don't dissuade their kids from, making it a downward spiral IMO :(

We Dare cancelled for UK

The furore surrounding Ubisoft's raunchy Wii game, We Dare, was too much for the publisher, who's confirmed the title will now not be making it to UK stores.

"Following the public reaction to the 12+ rating of We Dare, Ubisoft has made the decision not to sell the game in the United Kingdom," a Ubi rep has told The Telegraph.

The game itself isn't particularly explicit, and was given a 12+ rating by PEGI, which it reasserted was the 'correct' decision speaking to CVG earlier today.

However the trailer for the game (below) was slightly more suggestive, triggering outrage with mainstream press, Parliament and parents. The teaser (in every sense of the word) showed two consenting couples seemingly indulging in a bit of light partner-swapping titillation, helped along by the mini-games in Ubisoft's otherwise 'flirty' title.

Ubisoft has been clear that, despite the PEGI rating, it's targeting a mature audience as the trailer suggests.

Before scrapping its UK release, Ubisoft had announced plans to add a 'Parental Discretion Advised' sticker to boxes to provide extra warning for parents of younger gamers.

The funny thing is, if it hadn't have been for the PEGI rating, they probably could have just sold it without any bother :lol:
