A peer and former defence minister has described the A400M military transport plane - which is being bought by the cash-strapped UK armed forces for a secret but outrageous amount of money - as a "Euro-w*nking make-work project" in the written Parliamentary record.

The straight talk came from Lord Gilbert, who held various ministerial portfolios in the 1970s - including a defence one - and did another spell in the MoD as a peer in the first years of the Blair government.

From The Register

Even though I have family working on this plane, IMO he speaks truth.

The only reason we don't need this as much any more is because we bought 5 C17s, which is a kick ass plane.

The A400M is suited to replacing the ageing C-130 though.

You say aging, but new modern versions of the Herc are released on a regular basis. The A400 can't do anything more than a modern Herc.
