And suddenly the benefits of having a highly centralised, Westminster system become abundantly clear.

I would go absolutely off it if my local authority decided to "ban" something like L4D in my area.

But they can do that when it comes to films. Some even banned Life of Brian as blasphemous, even if they had no cinemas.

Bit different in the UK though. If your country council or whatever bans a film, you can probably actually consider driving somewhere outside your county to watch it. In Australia, the nearest place not in your 'county' could be two days drive away...

I had no idea they could do that. TBH I think that proves my point, I will decide if I want to see the Life of Brian, I don't need some stuck-up County Councillor to decide for me.

The concept of "the censor" has always amused me.

They decide what may "corrupt" our minds because of it's "depravity", and yet they apparently can view the most depraved films of all with total immunity. Why? Because they're "better than us". Or at least that's what they believe. "Stuck up" is exactly the right phrase.

AFAIK, the UK BBFC system has a range of people from various walks of life, ages, backgrounds who view material submitted and make recommendations with the rating scheme in mind. No reason at all you couldn't apply for the job.
