Post subject:  Adobe throws in towel, adopts HTTP Live Streaming for iOS

Quote:
Adobe previewed some new streaming video capabilities of its Flash Media Server at the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show, including new compatibility with iOS devices like the iPad. Instead of getting Steve Jobs to relent on his "thoughts on Flash," however, Adobe is instead adding HTTP Live Streaming support to Flash Media Server.

HTTP Live Streaming is a protocol that Apple developed to stream live and recorded video using standard HTTP connections instead of the more difficult to optimize RTSP. It uses H.264-encoded video and AAC or MP3 audio packaged into discrete chunks of an MPEG-2 transport stream, along with a .m3u playlist to catalog the files that make up the individual chunks of the stream. QuckTime on both Mac OS X and iOS can play back this format, and it is the only streaming format compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

While this is a good thing, there are still a plethora of Flash based web sites or Flash applications that cannot be used by iOS devices. You'd have thought that Adobe might put more work into features such as "compile Flash to JavaScript" or similar...

Just out of interest, why do you believe Adobe should bend to make Flash compatible with iOS, rather than the other way around? :?

I don't particularly. Nor do I think apple should be forced to support it on ios. It's buggy, proprietary and crap. I've not actually missed it on my iPhone one bit.

I don't like Flash, I block it wherever I can, however there are a few games out there that I like to play, or some videos that I like to watch.
I can't play or watch these videos/games on iOS, but just as frustratingly I have to unblock Flash to play in my regular browsers.

Flash doesn't provide an open, accessible web. HTML, JavaScript, CSS, etc. provide a much more open web.

Plus you get statements such as
"Apple recently began selling its portable computers without Flash pre-installed, and we discovered that running Safari without Flash seemed to increase battery life of the latest MacBook Air as much as 33 percent"
And friends with Androids have noted a hit in battery life since having Flash on their phones. Why do I want to sacrifice battery life for something I don't want 99% of the time?

So is iTunes. ;)

TBH I find JavaScript to be quite temperamental and buggy, and it also has a far from desirable reputation regarding security.

Annoyingly many websites require JavaScript to function properly, much like Flash. If I could get away without having either installed, I would.

Oh, and in what respect is Java "open"?

They did last month, it is called Wallaby. It will compile a lot of stuff over to HTML5/CSS3 and JavaScript for WebKit browsers. But it can't cope with some of the stuff, so complex games won't be converted, for example.

Java and JavaScript are completely unrelated. Netscape called ECMAScript JavaScript as Java was the hot new programming language and they wanted to the scripting language to be somehow affiliated with it. Apart from the name they are not related...

I am shocked - no, horrified - that someone on this forum could confuse the two. ;-)

My first year web programming lecturer almost always referred to the language as ECMAScript, and enjoyed reciting the story of why it had been called JavaScript...

Edit: And clean up your quotes, mister! ;)

If you read the rest of my post, I think it becomes fairly obvious I was referring to JavaScript.
