http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8020042.stmSo, next time you complain about the delays, breakdowns and overheating, remember it's the best mass transit system in Europe.

I was really impressed with the service when I was in London last August. I was less impressed with the other travelers: Don't run up/down the escalators, if you trip you might take me with you. Don't push me out the way to get to your train, there is another one in two minutes, and besides, you've just missed the one you wanted anyway.
If it wasn't for the mentality of some of the other passengers it would be a much, much better experience. But it's still a remarkable service IMHO.

I have to say, I agree with you. The system is fine, it's the billion people that are the problem.

Just recently had my first trip to London which didn't involve me being a quivering wreck at the thought of using the tubes. Once I was coherent enough to actually look around me, I really enjoyed the experience, the convenience and the price, even standing up isn't bad if you (like me) can find the fun in most things.
I would have thought the US "L-train" would rival the tube, but then it's not run as often or to as many places.

Being as I now work for them I think it might be deserved. Only possibly Paris has a similar sized system
Its the sheer age and complexity of the system that causes the issues. Ideally it would be great to shut the whole lot down for a year or so and modernise it but that’s not really practical is it

I don't use the tube very often as I don't live in London. Other than the overcrowding, it's okay, but it's not a patch on Hong Kong's MTR or Singapore's MRT. The rest or Europe must be pants.

I remember back in Aug 06 when me and my gf where in a long distance relationship at the time. She came over to visit from Norway and I travelled up from Southend to Gatwick to meet her. The tube train got stuck at a signal for about 30mins on the way back and it must of been well over 100 deg on the train, which caused her to faint. When we got to the next station the staff were no help at all So if the tube is the best in Europe, I cant imagine how bad some of the other systems are

Every time I am in London, the Tube is invariably closed, broken or both.

For the cost per mile, it really should be the best in Europe, as it's certainly the most expensive.
Fact of the day: The shortest tube journey you can make is Covent Garden to Leicester Square, at a cost of £4 per 250m, taking 45 seconds platform to platform.
