Post subject:  Sony's PSN - your data compromised

What appeared to be an inconvenience to some, and an annoyance to those who paid for it, could now get mega serious.

Quote:
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

Just checked my last transaction and it's my old card that was replaced a couple of weeks ago if not I was going to cancel it.

How have Sony allowed this to happen?

They probably employed security experts. We all know how expertly secure they can be...

My original sign-up card goes out of date in a few days and I haven't updated PSN with the newly activated one, so there's little point worrying about it, thankfully. I'll be changing my access password and details though

Not mine. :D

I'm so tight I only download extras that come with games or extras that are free. I always buy hard copies so I've never used card details.

Yay for tight old git stuck in his ways. :D

Good old CVG

From Sony (article doesn't tell you any more than you already know at this point):

Good luck with that

I think you're all fixating on credit cards far too much. The fact is, the information they say may have leaked, completely aside from CC details, is enough for someone to fraudulently take out new credit agreements in your name. So you could end up financially screwed even if they don't have you current credit card details. If you haven't been using them already, I'd seriously consider going to creditexpert or experian and taking out their services - they can watch for someone trying to use your details to get credit and inform you if it happens.

Otherwise, you could have a really nasty surprise turning up at your door some time.

The card seemed (seems) the likeliest threat to me though. Either way, I don't think there's much more I can do about it other than be vigilant with my bills, and I'll be phoning the bank tomorrow to let them know about this just in case*...

* Considering my bank, I'm probably wasting my time anyway

I really should stay away from CVG but I cannot help it. I cannot believe the comments from Sony fans saying stuff like "well XBL was down for 11 days once" and such. Fanboyism is blinder than I thought.

Well in this case, yes, fair enough. But there's no specific reason to assume XBL is actually immune to something like this happening to it. Do you have a credit card tied to your XBL account, or do you just use the pre-paid points cards? Now we've had a very public demonstration about just how much personal info is stored in 'games console accounts', it would be prudent to assume the XBL is very much on the target list for the black hat community.

I dont assume XBL is anymore immune to the blackhats, which is why I put the [obvious trolling] in. :D I personally wanted the PS3 over the Xbox360 but as my wife bought it for me as a present I cant really get rid of it
As XBL has been a premium system for longer than PSN (i think?) and I believe has a larger paying audience, you would think it would of been a juicer target. But then again MS havent been on a major suicidal mission to piss off those people with the skills and knowledge to perform the attack.
Im sure the guys n gals at XBL are probably having a security audit/crossing their fingers/praying they dont get hit.
As its a major PR coup for them and all without doing anything.
