Quote:
Britons should be braced for higher energy bills this winter after Centrica warned that wholesale gas and electricity prices have risen by a quarter compared with last year.

Centrica blamed the ongoing unrest in the Middle East and the Fukushima nuclear crisis following March's earthquake and tsunami in Japan for pushing up the cost of power. Domestic bills, the energy giant said, do not yet reflect this.

"In the UK, the forward wholesale prices of gas and power for delivery in winter 2011/12 are currently around 25% higher than prices last winter, with end-user prices yet to reflect this higher wholesale market price environment," said Centrica, which owns British Gas, on Monday morning.

Sometimes I think they just make up excuses just to push the price up.

Well they are very slow to drop them so boosting margins and profits every year. So they love volatility.

Jumpers. They're the way forward.

I'm seriously considering opening up the fireplaces downstairs, and sourcing an old a back-boiler to run the heating/hot water.

If I had the space and the money I'd get an Aga.

One of my bosses has underground heating. It took a good few years but it pays for itself, reducing heating bills.

Unrest in the middle east, quite a reasonable basis.

Could someone explain how the [LIFTED] the Fukushima reactor having problems puts up electricity prices in the UK?

With the price of oil as it is, you might change your mind. The gas combi-boiler is much cheaper to run than the aga TBH.

I'm going to start burning MPs, bankers, speculators and energy company chairmen to keep me warm.

Yeah, I considered that too, but storing the bodies was going to be a real pain.

However, the thought of burning them does give me a warm feeling. :D

i switched from Eon to scottish power middle of last year and am paying 30 per month less to them then was to Eon and came out of this winter £35 in credit
so it goes to show how some energy companies are just rip off merchants

not withstanding that i had a 6 month running battle with Eon over the last and final bill which i hasten to add i won ...

That's the other aspect of energy companies I don't like - the way they unilaterally increase your DD amounts. "We have increased your DD amount to cover estimated increased consumption over the winter". SOD. OFF. There's no way I'm suddenly going to use an extra £40 a month.

Hence I take final bill or pre-payment, extra cost be damned.

I pay quarterly for what I've used. It may mean I don't get the best rate, but I'm not having them use me as their personal bank. I also have had to read my own meter for the last wo bills.

My heating bills are low but then I barely have it on and then only minimally. I use clothes instead to regulate my temperature. I dread to think what it could be. I am exceptionally energy efficient/mean. I use low energy bulbs everywhere and am now swithcing to LED lighting because it is cheaper still to run, and the light from low energy bulbs is not white. If it gets really cold I practically live in one room. A bit extreme but I would rather do that than waste it heating a house.
