How much quicker could we pay it off if we stopped the multi-billion pound tax deals and multi-million pound council corruption/incompetence? :x

Russia isn't something to aspire to FFS

Eliminate the tax loopholes and we could eliminate the deficit very quickly. The the deficit is from collapsed tax revenues not excessive over spending as the coalition are claiming. Though that does not suit their ideology of destroying the welfare state and cutting taxes.

+1

I don't mind paying taxes - necessary evil and all that. I do mind when some fcuker, earning ten times as much as me, is paying less tax though.

There's currently roughly about the same in unpaid tax, not loopholed taxes but regular tax, that there is the current deficit.

Get it. Send round the heavies, whatever, get it.

Protesters held placards bearing messages including "Drowning in debt", "No more EU bailouts" and "Stop spending money you don't have".

Is it debt or deficit? Last time I looked, it was a deficit, which is spending more than we get in. This country has had a much higher national debt in the past, and we spent our way out of it. That’s what went on in the 1950s and 1960s. It strikes me that the austerity supporters use the words which are emotive and suit their message at the time. Hence our chancellor talking about “paying off the nation’s credit card” in one news broadcast, and “reducing the deficit” in another. The language changes from programme to programme, and is clearly targeted to the demographic.

Anyway, only 350 supporters turned up. Hardly a resounding endorsement.

One needs to distinguish between

Tax Avoidance - Legal
and
TAx Evasion - illegal

I (and anyone with any sense) will practise Tax Avoidance--I have an ISA with somecash - tax avoidance. I have some shares froma SAYES from my old job - tax avoidance, SHMBO will in her small part time business ofset any legitimate expenses against her tax bill - tax avoidance.

TAx evasion on the other hand is illegal BUT I'm sure most here who run and pay for a house will have offered cash for a discount to a builder etc knowing that the reason they get one is that they are encoraging that builder to not decaire it and so evade tax

Its not all simple black and white

Not surprising not many turned up, it's already happening, so not really worth getting out of bed.

Protests are usually to change something, which takes effort. Why would you go to that effort if what you want to happen is already happening?
