It looks like they left the workings for left hand drive cars and used cables to transfer the pedal for right hand drive.

But the cable is fitted such that a passenger can get a foot on it and push and the brakes are activated.

A pretty scary thought - and one borne out in the video.

For the ultimate “brakes left on the left hand side” experience, you needed my Dad’s 1960s Skoda Octavia. It was a real hatched job, with the handbrake between the passenger door and the passenger seat. Hill starts were interesting for him.

We should probably just switch to driving on the right like the majority of the globe. Then crap engineering like this wouldn't happen.

Being British, I strongly believe that the right side is the wrong side and everyone else should change. However, consistency would be good. Ideally, they should all use £sterling and GMT too.

Brings a whole new meaning to back-seat driving :lol:

Basically these cars are built as left-hand with electrics etc on left side and they then route the cabling behind the front passenger well - but in this case the cabling is clearly not insulated enough!

That would be awful. I always brake later than my wife does. I often see her pressing he foot as if she was breaking when she's in the passenger seat. That would cause me no end of problems.

Saw the full report on BBC's Watchdog tonight. Wow - what a botched up effort!

It wouldn't have been an issue if Citroen had protected that area in the footwell with a hard cover of some kind - as it is they covered it up with a bit of a moulded felt panel and then the carpet laid over that. Any engineer with half a brain would know that wasn't enough protection from a passenger applying pressure with their foot.

The first generation Clio had problems as well (16v version). The clutch cable had to go at such an angle across the engine bay, that they would wear out very quickly on UK models...

I had a Renault 5 years ago and the bonnet release was by the passenger door.

For some reason, after Dave posted about the Clio, this thread was flagged at work as being 'Tasteless and Offensive.'
I'm no fan of Renaults, but that's a bit strong. :lol:
