Can you prosecute prosecutors for stupid prosecutions? They should be able to predict that the trial will fail using the same crystal ball they expect the scientists to use.

They should be prosecuting whoever maintained the historic buildings that collapsed and killed so many people in such a relatively modest earthquake.

Bearing in mind we're talking about Italy, I doubt anyone was maintaining the historic buildings.

It is not as if Italy does not have a history of earthquakes. There should be an emergency program in case of emergency. All public buildings should have a disaster plan. I would place more blame on building inspectors/contractors rather than the scientists who are still many years from a reliable warning system. Prosecuting the prosecutors would probably be a waste of time but maybe they should have to pick up the costs of any failed cases out of their budget. Maybe we could try it here. ;)

In that case the government is responsible for being irresponsible. It's criminal negligence.

FFS! Any GSCE student could tell you it's easy to predict volcanic eruptions, but very very difficult to predict earth quakes.
An even if it was predictable (which I doubt), it's not like they caused it, so how could that be manslaughter?

The Italians have to find someone responsible for any death due to anything other than natural causes. I don't think that will be part of the issue here though.
