Quote:
Broadband prices are set to rise as consumers use increasing amounts of data, the owners of Orange have warned.
Speaking in Paris, France Telecom’s General Secretary Pierre Louette said that increasing demands for faster networks and larger data allowances were resulting from consumers downloading large amounts of video and increasingly playing video games and using video chat online. Although M Louette said that there were no plans for Orange to increase its prices, he added that it was “sure” that the industry as a whole would need to put up prices.
“If you look at what customers are doing online, they’re asking for more data and better networks,” said M. Louette. “That means we need to invest across the industry and if people are using more of a service they will pay more for it.” He cited a report from AT Kearney stating that "modification of retail pricing shcemes is the default option if no decisions are made on creating alternatives".
Broadband prices in France have already have begun to rise. M Louette said that, for instance, data use on mobile phones in Paris in rising at a rate of 5 per cent per week and that similar trends are being replicated in fixed-line broadband. New infrastructure is needed, but increased revenues are not keeping pace with costs.
UK communications regulator Ofcom has prided itself on Britain having broadband that, while not the fastest available in Europe, offers some of the cheapest rates because of a competitive market. In the year to the end of January, however, a survey found that prices rose from £114 per year to £126, a twice the rate of inflation. Commissioned by Ofcom-accredited comparison site broadbandchoices.co.uk, the survey also found that headline speeds rose from an average of 14 mbps to 18mbps

I think he might find he's mistaken about that one.

If anything people are much more price sensitive now then ever before. If they wanted to try increasing prices before the crisis would have been better. With many people on a tight budget it might fall down peoples priority. Others might sacrifice something for their broadband, but a price increase will get them to switch.

We offer different prices depending on the usage required. BT do the same, as do many other providers.

In reality what is going to happen is that the cheap packages are going to get lower priority than the expensive ones, so their speeds will get lower and lower as the network saturates.

Pay £5 a month, get sh!t broadband - but adequate for a lot of people who just want email and Facebook.

Pay £50 a month, get fantastic broadband. By which I mean I mean "upto" fantastic broadband, depending on line length and the weather.

My bill's already gone up £3 recently, any more within the next year and I'm off elsewhere or writing it off as a bad job on principle :P

I think that they know that most people simply are too lethargic to change ISP's, so are ripe for fleecing. The whole process of switching ISP can leave a user without access for days, worse if you have to move. They will not start till you have an active BT line. So if your line is not working then you are in trouble. It could take a few days for that to be sorted. Then the process of actually switching is so slow.

I only pay £6.49 a month for my connection. Ture, they've just upgraded it to 20Mbs, but I was happy with the 8Mbs I had before. I just don't need huge speed or download limits.

I pay £15, I could get it for cheaper if I signed up to Sky's phone package but the phone package that I have is far better so and happy to pay £2.50 a month more to not be bundled. I am also not capped or throttled. That suits me fine. If all prices were to increase then fine I have no choice but the combination of features I have now will be tolerable at a higher price.
