BBC Clicky. I can see the argument from both sides. But I don't agree with this statement: [quote]those who are well enough to use Facebook with a migraine are well enough to work with a migraine.[quote] Working requires much more brain power than surfing Facebook or other recreational sites. Scaling it up somewhat, it's like firing a chef because they called in sick and you found they made themselves lunch. However, she was probably in the wrong, and if anything, it teaches the rest of us to accept friend requests more carefully. |

If the friend request was made by somebody at the company to deliberately to catch her out, then I feel thats wrong. Its like the boss driving and sitting outside your house just to watch you dont go out. |

I disagree. She would still have been sat at a computer and, although I don't really have any expert knowledge of migraines, I thought that one of the symptoms was an intolerance to bright lights/monitors. I also thught that one of the best things for a migraine was to stay in a darkened room. I might be wrong but going on Facebook doesn't sound like a wise thing to do when you're supposed to be sick. |

You're right, when I have a migraine I can barely open my eyes in daylight, let alone even look at a computer screen. ![]() |

I had re-read my post and was wondering if maybe I was being too harsh, but for someone who suffers from migraines, (and I believe that the word "suffers" is probably an understatement) to agree with me suggests that maybe I wasn't. |

Thanfully I do not suffer from migraines but my mother does. On a severe attack she can be confined to bed for upto three days. With a massive intolerance to bright lights. I have little sympathy for this womans plight. To ill to use a computer and your facebooking.. numpty!!! |

No John it sounds fair, there's a massive difference between a migraine and a headache, certainly for me (disclaimer: YMMV) when I have a headache, I can still function, think, drive, talk, see etc. My migraines begin with the occular part, I get black and white flashing harlequinn shapes at the edged of my field of vision, then my field of vision gradually narrows until I have tunnel vision and can only see the thing I'm focussing on, I have no peripheral vision at all. By this stage I know I have about an hour before the pain starts and it ramps up gradually until it hurts to open my eyes at all in daylight. Sometimes the pain makes me vom as well which just makes the whole process harder to get through. Mostly, the best treatment is close eyes, keep still, take drugs to fight off the nausea and then go to sleep until it passes. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, but I'd never dream of going anywhere near a computer when I'm suffering from a migraine. |

My fault for not know what a migraine properly was, I thought it was simply a really, really bad headache... |

I'm sure that some people do call a really bad headache a migraine...at least until they have their first migraine ![]() |

Exactly. I personally don't suffer from migraines but if being intolerant to bright light is a symptom, if she was genuinely suffering, she would not be using a computer. |

I still think it depends somewhat...The article doesn't say what she was doing on Facebook. If she had gone home/called in sick then perhaps later in the day she felt a little better, then simply updated her status to let everyone know what a thumping headache she had and to ask no one to disturb her... Unlikely , but plausible and unexplained... |

The bright light thing is only one stage of a migraine, once taht passes you can still have a headache and feel sick, but would be able to go on facebook. However, busted! ![]() |

Ive only had one migraine in my entire life, it was the most agonising pain in my head ive ever experianced, splitting head open with blood everywhere is less painful! would anyone know why I had a one off migraine? out of my whole life and never after it has reappeared, one just one half of the brain I mean one side, nasty nasty things, since that I sympathise people who have them often MUCH greater than before, torture. |

Bit harsh. You may be able to get onto FB for 10 minutes in between rounds of nausea and twinkly lights. My sister suffers from migraine occasionally, and she's capable of making a cup of tea and checking her email, and if that's all the employer expects then fine, but much beyond that you have to wait between the bouts of sickness and headaches. Certainly she doesn't drive, for instance.
