Motorola has blamed performance-hogging, battery draining apps for 70% of Android handsets that get returned.

Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, said the Android Market's openness means there's nothing to prevent poor-quality apps from being sold to customers.

"For power consumption and CPU use, those apps are not tested," he told the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Technology, according to a report from Computerworld. "We're beginning to understand the impact that has."

Jha said a solution could be found in the company's Motoblur skin, which keeps track of the apps used and how they perform.

He predicted the system could soon alert users to how an app will affect their phone's performance, so they can choose not to run it - and know who to blame when the handset stops working smoothly.

Unlike Apple, Google doesn't vet the apps that are sold in its Market, although it does have the ability to remove malicious software.
