http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/is- ... cloud/9687Some people have been tracing the traffic from the iCloud beta and it looks like it is using Microsoft's Azure platform, as well as parts of the Amazon cloud service... With the new datacentre being used to hold the connections between the devices connected to an account and the actual data held on Azure and Amazon.

Might be to perf test it while in development as all they are making is middleware

That was also my initial thought, although it does make sense to use Azure and Amazon's cloud. They are established platforms with the reliability they need.
Apple don't have their own server platform with the capabilities they need and it takes a lot of work to make such a platform - putting together a platform for something like iCloud isn't just slapping a bunch of Linux or UNIX servers in a room. They need to develop the services that run the cloud.
If they can buy a proven, off the shelf, package for the storage of the data, they save a lot of time for developing the services to do the actual synchronising.
I think it makes sense, at least in the short term.
