Moving on from the towns that appear as mirages, China has an abundance of newly built ghost towns. .

And they're still building more...

"China built more of them," Tulloch said. "China consumes more steel, iron ore and cement per capita than any industrial nation in history. It's all going to railways that will never make money, roads that no one drives on and cities that no one lives in."

"It's like walking into a forest of skyscrapers, but they're all empty," he said of Chenggong.

I like the look of this place:

Shame nobody is really using it.

Trying to work out this as well, so much development that nobody is using, and they're building more. Surely it just can't be to keep people in work?

It is down to corruption from local government. The local officials make money from the activities. Also the Chinese have different attitudes to owning property. If you do not own a place getting married is not a prospect. Then they will buy a place and leave it empty. It is not a matter of buying to let. They treat property as a store of value.
