Elected representatives in California have been told their wages and expenses have been stopped and they will not be paid until the state budget balances.

State Controller John Chiang took the step after determining that the budget approved last week was not balanced.

It is the first time a law brought in last year, to stop California constantly missing its annual budget deadline, has been brought into effect.

Mr Chiang's decision sparked sharp criticism from legislators.

Yes but extend it to expenses and pensions so there is no way of getting around it. Also make sure that when back in surplus that it is not backdated.

Unfortunately it's the only piece of legislation that California can get behind. They have a stupid electoral system (one which I have seen recommended a few times here), whereby any substantial new piece of legislation requires approval in a state wide referendum. Now they have collectively voted for lower taxes, higher spending, and balanced budgets, and nobody can change any of these mutually exclusive requirements because the voters of California are collectively too moronic.

Perhaps California will be asked to leave the Dollar when it defaults.
