Quote:
The fully grown Belgian Shepherd dog and the German Shepherd puppy were found by other officers in a "state of collapse"in the back of the vehicle on Sunday morning.
They broke in and rushed them to an emergency vet but they were too ill to survive.
The Metropolitan police's Department of Professional Standards yesterday launched an investigation into the incident.
However, the handler, who was said to be "distraught" has not been suspended and the Independent Police Complaints Commission has not launched an inquiry.

I think that he should be fired. Animal cruelty should not be tolerated.

Not the first time it's happened, hopefully it's the last...

I know. My first reaction when I heard what:
"What? Again?"

Yeah, and at the time some Police spokesman said something like "Lessons will be learnt from this"
(I'm paraphrasing, but it was something to that effect)

EDIT: The officer in question has now, apparently, attempted suicide...
Dog deaths cop jumps from car and cuts wrists
Quote:
Sgt Craven, 49 - previously disciplined after ANOTHER of his dogs died from over-heating in his car - accepted a lift back to the school from a co-worker.

But sources said he jumped out of the motor in Newham, East London, while it was travelling at around 30mph, then vanished....

...One source said: "He appeared to have slashed his wrist in an apparent attempt to kill himself."

So, it's not the first time this officer has done this. Now that does make me extremely angry!

Headline fail, the dogs did not die in the car.

While generally tabloid headlines are wrong due to well, laziness basically in this case I don't think it's too bad. The dogs may not actually have been declared dead in the car but they were effectively dead when taken from it by the sound of things.

Guy I used to live next door but one to was a police dog handler. He genuinely thought of the dog as a member of his family. When the report says the officer in question is distraught I can believe it's true. However, you can't get away from the fact he screwed up and the dogs died because of it. I couldn't honestly say in what way he should be punished burt I suspect he'll be very lucky if he keeps his job as a police officer (there's not a snowball in hell's chance of him getting any sort of special duty ever again). I suspect jail time may be a possibility but wont' turn out to be the reality.

But apparently he's been disciplined before for a dog overheating in his car (if the Scottish Sun article is correct), and yet he's been allowed to be in charge of police dogs after that. So, as much as I'd like to believe that, he'll probably just get a fine and a slap on the wrist.

The officer screwed up big time. He cannot keep his job after this. The fact that he tried to kill himself would mean that he would be psychologically unsuitable for police work.
